EAST OAK looked at the Masterbuilt 30" — the best-selling electric smoker for years — and systematically addressed its three biggest complaints: single-wall insulation, chrome-coated racks that chip, and a small wood chip tray. The result is a smoker that's meaningfully better in daily use for a modest price premium.
The operation is identical to a Masterbuilt: plug in, set temp, load chips, smoke. If you've used any digital electric smoker, you already know how to use this one. The improvements are all in materials and construction quality, not in a different approach to smoking.
This is the EAST OAK's most impactful upgrade. Double-wall insulation means the smoker holds temperature better in all conditions — especially cold weather and wind, where single-wall electrics struggle to reach and maintain their target temperature.
In practice, this means the heating element cycles less frequently (using less electricity), temperature recovery after opening the door is faster, and cold-weather smoking is actually viable. If you've ever had a Masterbuilt struggle to hold 250°F on a 40°F day, the EAST OAK's insulation solves that.
Chrome-coated racks are the most common complaint about budget electric smokers. The chrome chips after 6-12 months of regular use, exposing bare metal that rusts. Replacement racks are a recurring $20-30 expense. EAST OAK's stainless steel racks eliminate this problem entirely.
The stainless racks are dishwasher-safe, won't discolor, and maintain a clean cooking surface indefinitely. Over the lifespan of the smoker, this saves $60-100+ in replacement rack costs — which alone justifies the price premium over the Masterbuilt.
Smoke flavor is comparable to the Masterbuilt — both produce mild, clean smoke from wood chips on an electric element. The wider chip tray extends burn time by roughly 15-20 minutes per load, reducing the number of times you need to refill during a cook. It's not a dramatic difference, but it's a welcome improvement.
The temperature display can read 5-10°F off from actual grate temperature — common in all budget electric smokers. An aftermarket thermometer placed at grate level ($15-20) is recommended for precision. Cooking results are excellent for the category: well-smoked ribs, chicken, salmon, and sausage with minimal effort.
If you're buying your first electric smoker, start here — the $50-70 premium over the Masterbuilt pays for itself in rack longevity and insulation quality. If you already own a Masterbuilt and it works fine, there's no reason to switch. If your Masterbuilt's racks have chipped or you're frustrated by cold-weather performance, the EAST OAK is the upgrade.
